Secondary and Higher Vocational Agricultural Education and Training Policies in Greece

Educational and training systems in agriculture

 Secondary Education in Greece

  1. General Education: nothing about agricultural education, no training.
  2. Technical-Vocational Education

 2.1 Vocational Lyceum:

It lasts 3 years. The first year is common for all pupils. During the next two years pupils are specialized by attending various Sectors (e.g. Agriculture, Mechanics, Electronics, Health, Economics, Computers, Vehicle, Electricians). The graduates have both Certificate of Lyceum and Vocational degree, level 3. There is no training, except of American Farm School. The curriculum includes training for 4-6h/week.

This kind of education is provided exclusively by the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs.

2.2 Vocational Schools:

It lasts 2 years and has 33 specializations in all Sectors (Interior design, gold and silver faculty, gardening, agro-tourism, hair dressing, hydraulic installations, cnc, animal production, agriculture machinery, greenhouses technicians, diary, plan production etc). The graduates have a Vocational degree, level 3. There is no training.

This kind of education is provided by the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Employment (OAED).

Since September last the programs of Vocational education of the Ministry of Employment, have included 24h/week training in companies and faculties in specializations oriented in industrial domains or services with only one exception for agricultural specialization.

Higher Vocational education (Institute of Vocational training, IEK)

It lasts 56 weeks, for both the graduates of Secondary General Education and the graduates of Secondary Technical-Vocational Education and includes 14 weeks of training in companies, public hospitalities, public departments, etc. The graduates have a Vocational degree, level 4.

Further or continuous training

It’s under the direct authority of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs and the duration of each program is up to 250h. Training varies, according to the levels and sector of activity. This level includes programs as “Environment and Sustainable development”  “Culture, Tourism, Regional development”, etc.

The adaptation of agricultural education and training to suit the needs of trade organizations

The curriculums of agricultural education include lessons which give pupils the necessary knowledge about agricultural products trading, agro-tourism products trading and management of small agricultural enterprises. There is a general plan, which involves the pupils with the spirit of this kind of market. We report the courses “Agronomics and development”, “Import in the Agricultural Economy”, “Agro-tourism and development”, “Marketing enterprises of agrο-tourism and agro-manufacture”, “Modern agricultural enterprises”.

European and international co-operation activities in the evolution of training systems

Very few collaborations existed among educational organizations from Greece and other countries of European Union (i.e. France, United Kingdom), to exchange experiences and knowledge.

Institutions intervening in agricultural training

The agricultural education and training in our country is drowning by Pedagogical Institute. The Pedagogical Institute is under the direct authority of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs and it draws the education of all Sectors. Then, the planning is approved from Ministry of National Education, that makes the laws and the Ministerial Decisions, which applied in the schools. Certain specializations that exist only at Ministry of Agriculture Vocational Schools or at the Ministry of Employment, are drawn by services of these Ministries, however the Ministry of National Education gives the final approval of their curriculums.

Role and involvement of the industry (professionals) in agricultural training

The Vocational Schools of the Ministry of Agriculture and the marketing company of agricultural instruments “Kontelis”, have been signed contract of employment, so their graduates, can deal in this company. Still, graduates of Vocational School «Treatment of cheese -dairy-farming", employment in manufactures of milk and cheese treatment, immediately after have their degree. Also, the industries of primary production transformation (there are  many food industries in our country) occupy graduates of Vocational Lyceums and Vocational Schools.

Engineering of training systems: approaches

The approach of training system in our country isn’t global. There is specialization in concrete objects. The specializations in agricultural education are about instruments, floriculture, agro-tourism, foods. But, there is one general specialization named "Modern enterprising agriculture", which deals with culture of agricultural more generally than others specializations do.

Main activities in international cooperation: country involved, topic, partnership

Cooperation existed with other European countries, in the frame of “Europea”. “Europea” is a program that deals agro-tourism and his promotion. Our country participate in this program.

Contacts existed with delegations of Holland and China, where subjects about agricultural education were discussed. But the cooperation remained only in the level of exchange of opinions, without any activities.
